Financial Goals Work Better When You Give Them a Date
'I want to build wealth' is a useful intention but a difficult plan. A goal becomes more actionable when it has a purpose, amount, and date.
For example, a five-year education goal should be treated differently from a 20-year retirement goal. The shorter the horizon, the less room there is to recover from a large market decline immediately before the money is needed.
Write down the target amount, expected contributions, time horizon, and a review date. Then separate the goal from the market noise surrounding it.
Financial planning is ultimately a coordination problem: income, spending, saving, investing, protection, and time need to work together.
