Why Travelers Are Chasing Better Exchange Rates

Travelers increasingly think about value beyond flight and hotel prices. Exchange rates can change the cost of food, transport, activities, and shopping once you arrive.

Mastercard's 2026 Travel Trendline identified favorable exchange rates as an important factor in destination decisions. That does not mean travelers should choose destinations solely based on currency movements, but it is a useful part of trip budgeting.

Create a daily local-currency budget before the trip and keep a small buffer for unexpected costs. Compare card foreign-exchange fees and ATM charges as well.

A destination that looks expensive in a headline may be manageable once you compare the actual daily experience.
