How to Compare Mutual Funds Without Getting Lost

How to Compare Mutual Funds Without Getting Lost

Comparing mutual funds only by recent returns can lead to poor decisions. Two funds may have very different objectives, risk levels, portfolios, and costs.

Start with the fund's category and objective. Then examine total costs, portfolio concentration, risk measures, consistency across market cycles, and how closely the fund follows its stated strategy. For passive funds, tracking difference and cost can be particularly relevant.

Past performance can provide context but does not guarantee future returns. The right fund is the one that fits the investor's goal, horizon, risk tolerance, and overall portfolio.

A short checklist is often more useful than a giant spreadsheet. Understand what you own before comparing which one performed better last year.
