How to Read an Earnings Report Without Being an Accountant

An earnings report can look intimidating, but investors can start with a handful of numbers. Revenue tells you how much business the company generated. Operating profit shows how much is left after core operating costs. Net profit includes additional items such as interest and taxes.

Then look at cash flow. A company can report accounting profit while generating weak cash flow, so the cash-flow statement provides an important second perspective.

Finally, read management commentary carefully. Are they discussing demand, pricing, capacity, competition, or new investments? Compare today's numbers with previous periods and with the company's own targets.

The objective is not to predict tomorrow's share price. It is to understand whether the underlying business is improving, weakening, or changing.
