Why Post-Quantum Security Is Suddenly a 2026 Priority

Post-quantum cryptography sounds futuristic, but the planning problem is very practical. Some encrypted information needs to remain confidential for many years. An attacker could collect encrypted traffic today and attempt to decrypt it later when more powerful quantum systems exist.

That creates a 'harvest now, decrypt later' concern. Organizations therefore need to know where cryptography is used, which systems depend on older algorithms, and how quickly those systems can be upgraded.

The first step is not buying a quantum computer. It is creating a cryptographic inventory. Security teams can identify certificates, APIs, VPNs, databases, backups, and applications that rely on public-key cryptography, then prioritize long-lived sensitive information.

The 2026 cybersecurity conversation is increasingly about cryptographic agility: the ability to replace algorithms without rebuilding an entire platform.
